It was a full house at the Northtown Mall Home Depot store in Blaine as over 50 young hockey players and their parents built stick handling triangles. The materials and tools were donated by Home Depot.

Participants came from the Mounds View, Centennial, Elk River and North Metro Hockey Associations.

Joe Baker, who played for Herb Brooks at the University of Minnesota from 1974 to 1979 was the guest coach, helping kids build the triangles and then teaching them drills on how they can use the triangles to improve their stick handling.

“The value of the stick handling triangle is that it works your hockey hands,” said Amy Alt, program director of the Herb Brooks Foundation and the clinic director. “If you use the figure 8 pattern, even for just 10 minutes a day, it will improve your handling. Players can use it on dry land or on the ice.”

The stick handling triangle building clinic at the Northtown Home Depot store was the second Alt has organized. The triangle design was perfected by the employees at Home Depot in Chaska for a clinic that Alt organized last year. She said plans are in the works for additional Herb Brooks Foundation-sponsored triangle building clinics at other Home Depot stores.
