Schwan Super Rink hosting U.S. Women's National Team Goaltending Development Camp, May 11-13, 2018. Great chance to see USA’s future Olympians
The Schwan Super Rink at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn. will host the fourth annual USA Hockey Women's National Team Goaltending Development Camp, May 11-13, 2018. The camp, which annually brings together the nation’s top female goaltenders from the U18 to professional level, provides athletes with specialized training and mentoring, as well as critical resources to support their long-term development as elite goaltenders.
For fans of hockey – specifically fans of the USA Women’s National Team – it’s a great opportunity to check in with the next generation of potential goaltenders for Team USA.

Gold medal winning USA goalie Maddie Rooney, from Andover, will not be attending, but the other two goalies on the gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team, Nicole Hensley and Alex Rigsby, will act as goalie mentors supporting lead coach Matt Kelly.
The roster skews to the young side, with several veterans of USA U18 World Championship teams playing.
Among the 18 goaltenders attending, there are six with Minnesota ties:
Ava Bailey, from Hudson, Wis., is the starting goalie for Hill-Murray School.
Josephine Bothun, from Forest Lake, just completed her sophomore season for Forest Lake high School, and has committed to play for Penn State, starting with the 2020-21 season.
Alex Gulstene, originally from Vancouver, B.C. now living in Minneapolis, has dual USA-Canada citizenship. Gulstene was a two-time gold medalist with the U.S. Women’s National Under-18 Team at the 2017 and 2016 IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championships. She just finished her freshman year at the University of Minnesota, earning 11 starts.
Makayla Pahl, from Rochester, plays on the boys’ team at Rochester Mayo High School and was a member of the USA Women’s National Team that won the gold medal at the 2018 U18 World Championship in Russia.
Emma Polusny, from Mound, just finished her freshman season as the St. Cloud State University, earning All-WCHA Third Team and All-WCHA Rookie Team honors.
Sydney Scobee, from Minnetrista, played at the Breck School, and just transferred from Vermont to the University of Minnesota.
Additionally, one of the coaches is Steve Guider, head coach of the Blaine High School girls’ team.
The players range in age from 15 to 24 and represent 11 different states. Minnesota leads the way with five representatives, followed by Illinois, Massachusetts, and New York with two apiece. Alaska, Connecticut, Michigan, North Dakota, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Wisconsin each have one.
Here is the schedule for on-ice training sessions. All practices are on rink 6, and are free and open to the public. This is a great opportunity for coaches to observe drills, and pick up some coaching tips to work with goalies on your own team.
Friday, May 11: 9:15-10:30 a.m. and 5-6 p.m.
Saturday, May 12: 9:15-10:30 a.m. and 5-6 p.m.
Sunday, May 13: 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
