Blaine, Minn. (May 10, 2018) – The Herb Brooks Foundation announced two winners of Herb Brooks Foundation scholarships for 2018. The grants are awarded to players age 6-16, with the intent of providing financial help to players and teams for the advancement of individual and team skills.

The recipients of the 2018 Herb Brooks Foundation scholarships are: Hayden and Weston Weir, ages 10 and 6, from Menomonie, Wis. and the Hiawatha Hawks hockey program in Minneapolis.

The grant to Hayden and Weston Weir will provide financial assistance to help the brothers attend the Wes Walz Hockey Camp at the Schwan Super Rink at the National Sports Center in August.

“We are applying for the Herb Brooks Award to help continue our love for hockey over the summer,” the boys wrote on their application. “My brother and I are helping shovel snow to earn money for the camp, and my grandparents are also helping to pay.”

Michael Dripps, coach of the Hiawatha Hawks Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Team, applied for a Herb Brooks Foundation award to help purchase ice time for a summer hockey program that was successfully inaugurated in 2017. The grant will help reduce the cost for families playing in the program, and help the club grow the program.

“”Our coaching centers around positivity and fun, while building skills,” wrote coach Dripps. “We’ve had great success growing the hockey program at Hiawatha the last few years, with increasing enrollment every year. We are very welcoming, and have introduced the game to many players who are in their first year of organized hockey. We have a very diverse group of kids, both boys and girls, with varying socio-economic backgrounds.”

After successfully experimenting with the summer program last years, coach Dripps reported that many parents asked if the club would be offering summer ice time in 2018. The Herb Brooks Foundation award will ensure that happens.

The scholarship award winners were recognized by the Herb Brooks Foundation Board of Directors at the organization’s May 10, 2018 meeting.

The Herb Brooks Foundation (HBF) is dedicated to providing opportunities for children to play hockey while teaching life skills and core values inspired and motivated by legendary Coach Herb Brooks of the Gold-Medal Winning 1980 USA Olympic Men's Hockey Team.

Over the past three years alone, over 4,000 children in the greater Twin Cities area have participated in a variety of HBF learn-to-skate, learn-to-play hockey programs, all free-of-charge to the children and their families.

The Hiawatha Hawks program in Minneapolis fielded four teams in 2017, and they expect to have five in 2018.
