The Early Years and an Olympic Athlete

Coach Brooks growing up on the east side of St. Paul, playing for Johnson High School and the University of Minnesota. He would go on to represent the United States the Olympics in 1964 and 1968.

Coaching at the University of Minnesota

Coach Brooks led his alma mater to three national championships in the 70s and finished his collegiate coaching with a record of 175 wins, 101 losses and 20 ties.

1980 Olympics

Named by Sports Illustrated as the top sports moment of the 20th century. For anyone who was alive then, they remember exactly where they were when the U.S. beat the Soviets in Lake Placid, NY.

Family Life and After 1980

Herb and wife Patti were married in 1965 and have two children, Dan and Kelly. After leading the 1980 U.S. Olympic team to gold, Herb coached several NHL teams, led France in the 1998 Olympics and returned to coach the 2002 U.S. Olympic team to a silver medal.
